Darfield Clock Tower
Darfield Clock Tower donated by Malvern Lions

Meeting night: 6:30pm, 4th Wednesday of every month except December, Coalgate Tavern

The club was chartered in September 1971 and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2011. The clock tower in Darfield’s main street, was gifted by the club to the community in 1996, to celebrate twenty five years service to the district.

A large rural club, we draw our members from a vast area between the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers, and from Springfield and Lake Coleridge in the west, to Aylesbury and Burnham in the east. At present we have a stable membership in the mid fifties.

Through the dedicated efforts of our members, many organisations both local and national have benefited by the club’s support in recent years. Among the groups are: Darfield Hospital, St Johns, the local Cancer Support Group and District Nurses, Darfield Playcentre, Ronald McDonald House and Cholmondeley Childrens Home while Camp Quality and Darfield High School receive annual support.

The club also makes a significant annual donation to the Lions Clubs International Foundation ( L.C.I.F.) to assist with worldwide aid projects.

Recently the club has completed several significant local projects. Amoung these are a Southern Alps Scenic Lookout and rest area on S.H.73 at Aylesbury, a bell tower at the Kimberley Cemetery to house the restored school bell from the Kimberley School which closed in the 1950’s, helped to provide two cars for the use of the local District Nurses, and provided funds to help the Darfield Preschool and Nursery to relocate to a new site. The picnic area at Waimakariri Gorge continues to be maintained by the club.

Social occasions which include members’ partners, form a special part of annual activities.
